15.3.2017 and 16.3.2017: Bart de Baere

This Wednesday Bart de Baere, director of M HKA, Antwerp, will visit the students at CSM where we will discuss the 6th Moscow Biennal an exhibition that ended up as a radical performative event, even if it was initially not planned as such. It took place in 2015, in challenging circumstances. The Moscow art scene considers it to have an energy matched only by the first edition. It lasted ten days and is only now rounded off, with the publication of the 300-page book ‘How to Gather’, published collaboratively between the M HKA in Antwerpt, the Witte de With in Rotterdam, the Kunsthalle Wien and the V-A-C Foundation Moscow. De Baere will recount the trajectory of this exhibition leading up to its final form to then conclude by focusing on its perceived outcomes.

On Thursday, Bart de Baere will be in conversation with Professor Charles Esche discussing ‘This is the show and the show is many things’, an exhibition that took place at S.M.A.K, Ghent in 1994, alongside related events. Variously described as a ‘fun palace’, a ‘warehouse’ and a ‘wasteland’, this quasi-mythical exhibition brought to the fore a new wave of artists and an innovative format, incorporating dance to debates; opening up the space of process, relational capacity and whimsy.
